Road Work

I know you are all anxious to hear about my time in California and Missouri, but I am working on a paean to Hakeem Olajuwon and I can't stop working on it simply to make you jealous of all the things I saw between SF and LA on the Pacific Coast Highway.

Let me tease you with this:

Across Houston, boys spent humid afternoons in their driveways imitating Olajuwon’s signature move, “The Dream Shake,” which froze countless opponents in their shoes. Holding the ball in the post, The Dream Shake began with a sudden pivot. With his back to his opponent, Olajuwon could turn left and shoot, turn right and shoot, fake one way and shoot the other or suddenly drive in, the defender reeling, the Dream iconic, the ball rolling off of Olajuwon’s hand and turning effortlessly through the net. Though there is no statistical evidence to prove it, it’s easy to imagine Olajuwon’s prime years in Houston begot more clumsy 5’5” prepubescent centers than any era since.
