Coincidences like this happen. Not realizing the saddest of all sad days on the Jewish calendar --a feat like beating Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, and Italy in the same World Cup-- is upon you the same day you visit the grave of David Ben-Gurion (the Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Hamilton of the State of Israel).

Most graves have two dates on them, but there are three dates on the tomb of David Ben-Gurion and his wife Paula. Birth, arrival in Israel, and death. Their graves look out over desert, the very zenith of all aspirations for a founding father. All these things sell a narrative that fades in the wash of time. Or grows dull with stains. I have no disasters to peddle today. But this is one place Birthright buses aren't stopping by today.
