Claudia Roth Pierpont on Duke Ellington

An extra prod of nachus is always felt when someone you admire writes something spectacular. Claudia Roth Pierpont, a former professor of mine (clearly not in a course on modesty), is one of those kinds of writers who operates on a special plane, someplace where things are visible to her that aren't visible to most. In other words, she's mad good.

No member , not even Strayhorn wrote a hit for the Ellington band, says Pierpont. Hey, at twelve I could have told you that was wrong. What was Duke's theme song?
