Summer 2009: Introduction to Fugue State

Dissociative Fugue Disorder: When a person is in a fugue state, he'll pick up and travel suddenly to some random point, not at all sure why he's doing it, and sometimes with little memory of who he is.

This summer I endeavored across the country, amassing 7000 miles of bragging rights, accruing fines and tickets, collecting bug bites and various embarrassments, passing judgment, visiting landmarks, lurking after women, meeting strangers, camping out, staying in cities, sleeping on couches, crashing in motels. I had a vague blueprint for travel and too much time. I spent much of the summer working on my graduate thesis; for my own creative sanity, the rest of what I did shall be detailed here.

Fugue State is the credo for Summer 2009. I was going to name it 'Impregnated Tidbits of Dope Hits' but I didn't want to affect an entire persona. Plus the name was taken. Fugue State is the opposite of such contrivances. It's the admission that one often doesn't know who he is and one never knows more about himself than he does in new places. In short, it's a conjuring of honesty from the subterfuge and the inefficacy in avoiding pretension. Enjoy!
